7 Newbie Tips for Casino Slot Machine

I want to preface this post by saying that I am in no way an expert on gambling. I have only played the slot machines twice in my entire life. This past weekend, some family and I went to a local Indian casino play the slot machines for a couple of hours. The trip was a blast! Definitely not something I get to do everyday.

If you have a casino near you, it may be worth exploring. Please, just be sure you gamble responsibly 🙂 Slot machines can be scary. You put cash in a flashing machine, press a few buttons and (more often than not) walk away empty-handed. If you start with the proper mindset, keep realistic expectations and follow these seven tips, you will have a great time with your family and friends. Best of all, you won’t walk out too far in the hole.

Tips for Casino Slot Machines -- Preppy & Periwinkle

Set a pre-determined budget before starting the day.

Decide how much money you are willing to spend before you head out to the casino. Be completely prepared to lose all of it. You may get lucky, but don’t bank on winning. Withdrawal that amount in cash and do not take out any money once you get onsite. This will allow you to pace yourself during the trip.

Get a players club card.

Most casinos have free members clubs. Getting a player card allows you to earn points as you play which may result in rewards. Some give you a bonus for signing up on your first day. When I got my card this time a Pechanga, I was given a $5 credit for returning to the casino. That was just enough to get me a caramel apple covered in M&Ms from the food court. This snack was the perfect energy booster in between slots!

Pay attention to Smoking and Smoke-Free sections.

Most casinos allow for smoking within the facilities. If you are non-smoker who is sensitive to the smell (like me), find the smoke-free sections immediately. Keep in mind that you will still be affected by the smoke, but much less so.

Try out multiple machines.

You would not believe the variety of slot machines out there. From cupcakes to leprechauns and Wheel of Fortune to Willie Wonka, the wide selection is guaranteed to keep you entertained. Don’t waste all of your money at one machine. Rather, try out a few different ones. Find your favorite!

Understand how to play the machine before you press buttons.

I was surprised by the complexity of the slots. On my first trip, I thought I was going to pull a lever and watch three wheels spin in hopes of getting a row of 7’s. I was totally mistaken. Rather, some have 5×5 grids while others have multiple mini games. You also don’t bet a set amount. Each machine allows you to bet various amounts. Some let you choose between 1 line to 50 lines. Others let you bet $0.15 to $2.50. Your odds of winning are higher when you spend more, but you also race through your funds faster. My advice would be to bet smaller amounts and play more games. That means more time playing and more fun.

Don’t expect to win big!

Go into the day expecting to lose the money you bring with you. Sorry but you better plan on going back to work on Monday. The chances of you walking out with big bucks are extremely low. You aren’t going to become a millionaire, but that isn’t why you are there. The trip is all about the fun!

Stay with your family and friends.

Yes, playing the slot machines may be exciting. However, you are ultimately there to spend time with your loved ones. Stick together and root each other on. I found it even more enjoyable to watch my grandma rake in the dough than I did when my machine was the one lighting up. Plus, watching one another play will extend the amount of time you are in the casino without adding to the amount of money you spend.

Now it is time for you to get out there an try something new. Just be sure you play responsibly and don’t bring too much money on your trip. Remember enjoy the company and experience. This slot machine adventure is not about the money!

Until next time,

P&P ❤
